Chapter 16

I planted McNamee on his big, puffy, brown corduroy couch just as Fernandez was walking into the house.

“Just the two that ran?” I asked.

“As far as my guys saw,” Fernandez said.

“Only two of you in the house?” I asked McNamee.

He shrugged.

“We grabbed a gun off the chair in the living room here. Also found a backpack outside in the backyard,” Fernandez said. “Care to guess the contents?”

I wasn’t in the guessing mood. “Enlighten me.”

“It looks like a bunch of jewelry,” Fernandez said. “Some watches. Surprisingly, no boxes or receipts.”

“Hmm,” I said. “Well, wouldn’t you know there was a party where a bunch of jewelry was taken. And what a hell of a coincidence that it was the robbery of that jewelry that brought me here.”

“That wasn’t mine,” McNamee said. “I don’t know anything about any backpack. You can’t prove anything.”

“Right,” I said. “What’s your problem with the guy outside?”

“Junkie prick just tried shooting me. That’s why I ran. I didn’t even see you cops.”

I furrowed my brow. “Hang on. That part of the story is new. Because a couple minutes ago, you said that you saw cops, so that’s why you ran.”

“Nah,” he said.

“So now you want to change your story to this guy tried shooting you, and that’s why you ran?” I crossed my arms over my chest, waiting on a response, which he seemed a little slow to give.

“Yeah,” he said. “He tried shooting me, so I ran.”

“Did you return fire?” I asked.

“No. I should have.” He groaned and seemed as if he wanted to jam the sentence back into his mouth.

“But how were you going to shoot if you didn’t have a gun?” I asked. “Because, you know, the 9 mm I pulled off you wasn’t yours.”

“Yeah,” he said. “It wasn’t. That’s why I couldn’t defend myself. I didn’t have a weapon.”

“Right.” I let out a long breath and jammed my palm into my eye. The guy’s bullshit was quickly wearing on me. “Okay. Let’s get to the point of why I’m here. I came here to ask you if you knew where Timothy Sandwell is.”

“I don’t know anybody by that name,” McNamee said.

“Did you want to think about that for a second?” I asked. “Because he tried to get you hired at the Piranha a couple weeks ago.”

“Never heard of the place. Never heard of the guy.”

“Of course you haven’t,” I said. “So you can’t tell me where Timothy Sandwell is?”

“I just said I don’t know who that is.”

“And yet somehow his truck is in your driveway,” I said.

“I don’t know whose truck that is.”

I looked at the ceiling and pulled in a long breath before returning my gaze back to the jackass on the couch. “Right. How could you? So is this how this is going to go? Because if you want to continue this route, I’ll just send you off to lockup and have someone deal with you later.”

He said nothing.

“You know, here’s something for you to chew on,” I said. “You probably
